Tummy Tuck Results - What to Expect From a Tummy Tuck

Tummy Tuck Results

Tummy tuck surgery can accomplish a lot you normally can't accomplish on your own.

As we age, our bodies become less and less able to eliminate stubborn fat deposits - especially around the stomach, arms and thighs.

Yes, working out may tone your muscles and help you lose weight, but it won't help you tighten your loose skin or your inner abdominal "girdle."

In the case of multiple pregnancies, for example, your inner girdle will often become loose and it is very difficult to get it back in shape.

A tummy tuck will tighten that inner girdle and help flatten the stomach. it will also remove the loose skin from your lower abdomen and tighten the skin of your upper abdomen.

Finally, a tummy tuck can also remove nearly all the fat of your lower abdomen as well as any stretch marks.

But remember that a tummy tuck is not a weight-loss technique!

The ideal candidates for tummy tucks are men and women who have fat and loose skin on the abdomen that will not go away with exercise or diet, and whose skin is not elastic enough to have liposuction.

Other good candidates are women who have baggy folds of skin on the abdomen and/or weakened abdominal muscles after pregnancy. Older people who, due to age and being a little overweight, have sagging, loose skin on the abdomen or weakened abdominal muscles, are also good candidates.

Not a weight-loss alternative

A tummy tuck is not a weight-loss method. The best candidates for a tummy tuck are healthy people with a fairly normal weight, and who have a slight amount of fat and loose skin on the abdominal area.

Tummy Tuck Scarring

A tummy tuck operation will always result in some scarring because it is done with incisions.

If a complete abdominiplasty is performed, there will be a scar from hip to hip and another scar around the belly button area.

For a partial abdominiplasty - or mini tummy tuck -- the incision is smaller and naturally the scar is smaller as well.

Most scars will heal over time, but others will remain visible. The amount of improvement depends upon the extent of surgery and the patient's skin tone, body build, and healing process.

After the tummy tuck surgery your abdomen may swell. The actual results will become more apparent as swelling goes down. It is important to note that a lot of patients may not see the final result for three to six months or longer.

If there's a future weight gain or a significant amount of weight is lost, or if you become pregnant, the results of tummy tuck will be affected.

Generally though, after successful surgery, your abdomen should remain firmer and flatter for many years.

You still have to, of course, follow a balanced diet and exercise regularly to maintain these results.
