Jaw & Chin Implants and Jaw & Chin Augmentation

The jawline and the definition of the human chin have long been associated with generalizations about the strength and even “nobility” of the human face. The notion of a “weak jaw” has been associated with actual weakness of character and even dishonesty.

As jaw and chin implants have become standard in the cosmetic surgery field, they are no longer options for the rich and famous only. The devices are safe and nearly undetectable and can be used not only along the lower jaw, but also into the chin area.

The simple truth is that a sagging jaw and chin soften the face in a way many people do not find appealing, especially if the traits are inherited. No woman really enjoys looking at her double chin in the mirror and seeing her mother’s face gazing back at her in silent testimony to the aging process.

Jaw & Chin Implants

As jaw and chin implants have become standard in the cosmetic surgery field, they are no longer options for the rich and famous only. The devices are safe and nearly undetectable and can be used not only along the lower jaw, but also into the chin area. In fact, in many cases improving the chin brings out the natural jaw line with better definition so no implants are needed there.

Types of Jaw & Chin Implants

There are two main kinds of jaw implants. Chin implants help redefine the front of the jawbone, while lower-jaw implants enhance both sides of the jaw.

Jaw & Chin Implant Procedures

A chin implant can usually be done in an hour and requires only a small incision either in the mouth or just underneath the chin. A small pocket is created in the tissue to hold the custom implant. The area is taped to both reduce swelling and to secure the placement. If sutures are used in the mouth, they will dissolve with no need for a post-operative appointment.

Lower jaw implants are slightly more complicated, only because both sides are usually done at the same time so approximately two hours are needed to complete the procedure. The incisions are almost always made inside the mouth on either side of the lower lip.

Jaw & Chin Implant Recovery

Of the two procedures, the chin implant heals more quickly, but in both cases swelling and discomfort resolve in a matter of days. The final contour of the area may take months to become visible, however, as the disturbed tissues heal and grow securely in place around the implant. Any jarring activity, like contact sports, should be avoided for a few months and initially a soft diet will be needed in concert with good dental hygiene to minimize both trauma and the chance of infection.
