Plastic surgeons, weight-loss doctors, and cosmetic dermatologists say that the last half of December is their busiest time of year for elective procedures simply because people have the time off to deal with the swelling, bruising, and other discomforts of recovery. If both Christmas and New Years fall on weekends, patients who have their cosmetic work done early in the week might even be ready to hit the holiday parties completely refreshed.
Some dermatologists report triple the number of their normal procedures in the week before Christmas. Patients admit they like to "hide out" when they heal, especially for some laser-based skin resurfacing techniques that can give the red, peeling appearance of a bad sunburn.
An additional reason for the popularity of the latter-half of December is insurance based. By this time of year, many people have met their deductible, making this an optimum time to incur medical expenses. While most cosmetic surgeries and treatments are not covered by insurance, weight loss surgery usually is, and can cost in excess of $35,000.
The normal load of weight loss surgeries goes up about 10% in December, with appointments for face lifts doubling. While these procedures may not qualify as "resolutions," they certainly indicate many people will be starting the new year "changed" in some way.
