Steve Laverson, MD

Descended from artists, Dr. Steve Laverson naturally visualizes and appreciates three dimensional beauty, and was raised in a creative environment.  Also strong in science and engineering, he attended the United States Naval Academy on a Congressional Appointment from 1975-77, and graduated summa cum laude in Life Sciences at the University of Maryland in 1979.   He applied and was admitted to the University of Maryland Medical School at Baltimore.  When he learned about the specialty of plastic surgery, Steve realized this would be the best career fit for his ability.  Because Steve loves human beauty, human victory in life’s struggles, and because he understands the great importance of personal appearance to self identity, from that moment on, Steve Laverson has passionately gifted beauty and improved quality of life for others to enjoy and to benefit from.

 

Dr. Laverson’s professional foundation was established after medical school, during ten disciplined postgraduate years dedicated to learning the art and science of surgery at respected teaching hospitals in Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, and New York.  He trained with surgeons at Johns Hopkins, University of Pennsylvania, Emory, UCLA, USC,  Mayo Clinic, and other esteemed institutions.  Among his most valuable experiences were his years at Martin Luther King Jr. General Hospital in South Central Los Angeles, one of the busiest trauma centers in the world when he was there, where Dr. Laverson was chief resident in general surgery.  Successful independent management of all types of major blunt and penetrating trauma continuously  is a crucible for the development of  broad applied anatomical knowledge, mature surgical judgment, technical skill, confidence, and a sound foundation for a lifetime of intangible professional expertise that is not widely available.  Dr. Laverson trained in plastic surgery with the largest and longest in existence private practice in the United States, the Long Island Plastic Surgical Group in New York.  Dr. Laverson easily passed oral and written board examinations to become certified by the American Board of Surgery (1992) and by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (1995). He re-certified in Plastic Surgery in 2005. Dr. Laverson is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, The American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, and has maintained busy offices in San Diego County since 1993.  He has held a variety of clinical and administrative positions at local hospitals, and has published scholarly contributions in several peer reviewed journals, including Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Aesthetic Surgery Journal, New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet, Journal of Trauma, and others.

 

Medical school and intense surgical specialty training inculcate a strong service ethic into physicians, a philosophy that Dr. Laverson feels most comfortable with. The value of a professional correlates with the value of service he or she provides to others.
