Breast Augmentation - Breast Augmentation Surgery Information for Women

In today's go-go world, the fact of the matter is that appearance matters. The way that a person dresses and the way that they look have a huge bearing on how others perceive them. Although this may seem unfair, this is the truth. When strangers meet for the first time, a large part of their first impression is formed by their opinions about how the other person looks.

The Typical Breast Augmentation Patient

The questions of why women get breast implants cannot be answered without analyzing who the typical breast augmentation surgery is. Typically, a breast augmentation is a woman who is in their early to mid thirties that is currently involved in a long-term relationship or who is married. They possess at least some college education and have been considering this surgery for years. As people grow older, they find themselves struggling with the different ways that their body ages.

More important than the way a person's physical appearance fuels other people's perceptions is the way that physical appearance affects a person's self-perception. When a person loves the way that they look, they walk with an air of confidence that cannot help but be noticed by others. However, when people struggle with their physical appearance, it is often noticeable through their body language.

Breast Augmentation Surgery Most Popular Procedure in 2009, 2010 & 2011

As the most fetishized part of the human body, people often struggle with the appearance of their chests. This is a large reason why breast augmentation was the most popular US plastic surgery procedure performed in 2009 (with 290,500 procedures), in 2010 (up 2% to 296,000) and in 2011 when 307,000+ Americans chose to undergo the procedure. In 2003 the number of persons undergoing the same procedure was 280,401. That was an increase of 12% from the year before (2002). No one can dispute the growing popularity of this treatment and it indicates that breast augmentation surgery will continue to be among the most popular plastic surgery treatments.

91% Of Women Just Wants To Look Better Without Clothes

As our bodies grow older and undergo changes caused by aging and other events such as pregnancy and weight fluctuations, our overall attitude changes. The majority of breast augmentation surgery patients felt that undergoing this treatment would give them a more youthful look that would solve some of their body-related problems. Past patients understand that this treatment is designed to enhance their appearance and surveys have shown that some of the popular reasons about why women get breast implants are:

  • to enlarge breasts to give the body a more proportional look
  • to balance a difference in breast size or shape
  • to reshape and enlarge breasts as a reconstructive technique following breast surgery
  • to reshape and enlarge breasts that has been reduced following pregnancy
  • to look better without clothes
  • to look better in clothes
  • to have larger breasts
  • to feel better about themselves
  • to feel more confident
  • to feel less self-conscious

What Can You Expect After the Surgery?

One of the biggest questions that people interested in obtaining breast implants through breast augmentation have relates to what the results are. Breast implants before and after questions can only be answered through a testimony of someone who has undergone breast augmentation and have obtained breast implants.

Ashlee Sampson is a 34 year old advertising executive from Memphis, Tennessee who obtained breast implants because she like the majority of breast augmentation treatments wanted to look better without her clothes on. Ashlee explains, "I always considered myself attractive and I definitely never had a problem getting dates. However, I was born with a slight disproportion between my breasts and I always wanted to correct them if I could. A couple of years ago, my older sister, Jesse, had breast augmentation surgery because she wanted to go back to the same look and shape of her breasts that she had before she had children. Seeing how little trouble that she had during the surgery and how much happier she was afterwards gave me the confidence to undergo this surgery."

Like most breast augmentation surgery patients, Ashlee took some time to consider all of the possible ramifications of undergoing this procedure.

Why Most Women Undergo Breast Surgery

Many misconceptions have arisen relating to the motivation for patients obtaining breast augmentation treatments. To clear up this issue, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery conducted a survey in which past breast augmentation patients gave the general reasons behind their decisions. From this 2003* survey results, we find that:

  • 91% wanted to look better without clothes.
  • 83% wanted to look better in clothes.
  • 83% wanted to have larger breasts.
  • 81% wanted to feel better about themselves.
  • 79% wanted to feel more confident.
  • 75% wanted to feel less self-conscious.

Now that we can see some of the rationale behind breast augmentation patient's intent on undergoing this surgical treatment, we have to see how these same patients feel about the treatment after the fact. Asking Ashlee, we find that, "this treatment has given a boost in my life. Although I certainly did not need this treatment to feel happy, I have gained a higher level of confidence and this has only helped things in my personal life. I feel seven years younger and this is definitely a decision I would make again if I had the choice." Ashlee's enthusiasm mirrors the attitude of breast augmentation patients after the surgery.

What Most Women Feel About The Results

In that same 2003* survey that the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Survey conducted with past breast augmentation patients, they asked past patients how they felt about the results of the surgery after the fact. The survey showed that:

  • 93% would recommend breast augmentation to friends and family members.
  • 92% are happy about their decision to get breast implants
  • 88% said augmentation "completely" or "mostly" met their expectations.
  • 92% reported positive effects on their overall appearance.
  • 84% said they would "very likely" get breast implants if they could choose again based on what they known, and 8% answered "likely" to the same question.
  • 82% reported improvements in their self-confidence

Questions & Answers

As any good doctor will tell you, deciding to have breast augmentation is not a decision to take lightly. It's a life-altering decision, and every potential patient should do a lot of research, consult with several doctors and ensure they are as educated as possible before making the ultimate decision. For any patient, beyond the specifics, there are some general questions that can't be overlooked.

Am I a Good Candidate for Breast Augmentation?

No matter how much a patient wants to have breast augmentation, each one has to very realistically consider if they are a good candidate. The best candidates for breast augmentation understand that while surgery may enhance their figure, it won’t completely change it. Patients who are already in good health, are physically active, and have realistic expectations, will have the most satisfactory results from breast augmentation. Breast augmentation can help women with a variety of breast-related issues; including overall size, sagging or reduced firmness, asymmetry, breast reconstruction after mastectomy, and changes due to pregnancy or weight loss, but it's not right for everyone.

How Do I Prepare for Breast Augmentation?

If you smoke, stop completely three weeks before surgery and don’t begin again until three weeks after. Smoking will slow the healing process and may increase chances of infection. You should also refrain from drinking alcohol and taking aspirin and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) for a week before surgery and at least a week after.

What Should I Ask My Surgeon?

During the pre-surgery consultation with your surgeon, give the doctor a complete list of any medications you’re taking, including vitamins, supplements, and herbal remedies. Bring a few photos of what you do and do not want your breasts to look like, along with bathing suits or bras to wear while you try on implants.

What is the Recovery Process Like?

After breast augmentation surgery, you should plan to take at least five days off of work. Have a friend, spouse, or relative drive you home from the hospital, and be prepared to ice your breasts for the first 48 hours after surgery to reduce swelling. Be sure to monitor your temperature, and take your antibiotics exactly as prescribed. Bruising, soreness and pain are normal after breast surgery, and may be worse if your implants are placed under your chest muscles. Full recovery from breast augmentation is slow and can take up to four months.

What Else Should I Expect After Surgery?

Some women experience nipple over-sensitivity or loss of sensitivity, but this generally subsides after a few weeks. Let your doctor know if it persists longer. Also, don’t be alarmed by buzzing, crackling, or gurgling noises coming from your breasts after surgery. These are caused by air bubbles and settling implants, and will stop in a few weeks. Your implants will take time to drop and soften, so be patient, be healthy, and get ready to appreciate the differences before and after breast augmentation.
