Botox Treatment

Botox

What is Botox?

Botox is a very diluted form of the botulinum toxin type A. This is the same nerve toxin that causes the paralyzing effects of botulism.

Cosmetic Botox treatments however only contain a miniscule amount of the toxin and pose very little threat to the average person seeking treatment for their skin.

How is Botox Used?

Botox is injected into the muscles in the neck, forehead and around the eyes that cause wrinkles when you frown, squint, laugh or smile.

The injections block the transmission of nerve impulses to the injected muscles, so the muscles relax and the skin looks smoother. The shots cause very little discomfort, but your doctor may numb the area with ice or an anesthetic cream before giving you the shots. The treatment takes about 10 minutes. You should not lie down or bend over for 6 hours after an injection to keep the toxin from spreading to other muscles.

It takes about four days for Botox to start to relax the muscles. The results last up to 4 months. To maintain the effects, you will need to repeat treatments every 3 to 6 months.

What are the Benefits?

Basically fewer wrinkles will show up on the areas of the face that were treated with Botox injections.

This means fewer crow's feet, fewer laughlines and fewer frown lines on the forehead. These effects will last as long as the Botox is in your system, which is usually about 3 to 6 months.

What are the Risks?

Before receiving Botox injections, be sure to tell your health care provider if you have ever had heart disease or a nerve or muscle disorder such as ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) or myasthenia gravis. Botox may make these conditions worse.
